Did you know that often knee pain isn’t because of the knee at all? If the knee begins hurting gradually and is exacerbated by exercise it is commonly a sign that there is a twist in your pelvis. This twist can effectively make one leg shorter than the other. When one leg is shorter you will tend to lean to that side, putting more weight on that knee and changing the angles of force through the knee. This can eventually lead to arthritis of the hip or knee.
If you are experiencing knee pain on one side, that has come on gradually and is worse after you have been running, you can get somebody at home or at your sports club to check to see if one leg seems longer than the other. The easiest way to do this is to lie on a bench or a bed on your stomach with your feet off the end. Get your examiner to bring the feet side-by-side and check if there is a difference in lengths. If you are noticeably shorter on the side that you’re getting your pain (more than about 4mm difference) then there’s a very good chance that your pelvis is out of balance.
